About MCC

The Meghalaya Climate Change Centre (MCCC) was established under National Mission for Sustaining the Himalayan Ecosystem (NMSHE) in October, 2015. NMSHE is one of eight National Missions under National Action Plan on Climate Change.

  • To identify vulnerability and risk assessment at district level.
  • To take up Climate change impact studies.
  • Institutional capacity building and R&D for database/information generation as per the SAPCC and NMSHE requirements.
  • To conduct training programmes for stakeholders including government officials, community based organisations, media etc.
  • To sensitize educational institutions/conduct community awareness programmes.

Meghalaya State Council on Climate Change & Sustainable Development
Description

The State has a nodal entity to address the climate change issue in a holistic manner. The institutional set up includes the Meghalaya State Council on Climate Change & Sustainable Development (MSCCC & SD).

The State has constituted the Meghalaya State Council on Climate Change and Sustainable Development (MSCCC&SD) which is currently chaired by Shri Conrad K Sangma. MSCCC&SD is the apex body to address the climate change issues in a holistic manner. The Meghalaya Climate Change Centre coordinates across departments on cross cutting issues. It also interprets the various National Missions’ objectives and strategies in the context of the State. MCCC is expected to forge partnerships with private sectors, academic institutions and civil societies to facilitate the implementation of various proposed actions in the State.

The State Council is mandated to:

  • Evolve a coordinated response to issues relating to climate change.
  • Provide oversight for formulation of action plans in the area of assessment, adaptation and mitigation of climate change.
  • Periodically monitor key policy decisions and their implementation status.
  • Any other function that may be deemed necessary by the Council from time to time.
  • Implementation of decisions taken by the State Council and the Climate Change activities in the State.
